Sustainability

We are defined by our remote and unspoiled Highland home, so we care deeply about preserving it. At Balblair, we are working towards a more ecological way of producing our whisky that can be enjoyed by the future generations.

Our approach to sustainability covers 3 areas:

Water

We care about protecting the natural beauty of our distillery’s surroundings for the future generations. High gravity mashing trials are currently underway to reduce our water consumption while maintaining our whisky’s luxuriously smooth character.

Seldom will you find a distillery in more scenic and unspoilt surroundings. Our home is located near the banks of the beautiful Dornoch Firth in the rugged shadow of Struie Hill.

Energy

We warmly embrace more environmentally friendly ways of crafting our whisky while retaining the multidimensional character of Balblair.

We are committed to our distillery being carbon neutral by 2040, so we reduced our carbon footprint in 2015 by switching to Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) rather than oil. In addition, we installed a Thermal Vapour Recompression (TVR) system in 2023 to reduce our energy consumption.

Balblair dunnage warehouses - our malt is crafted slowly and is matured at the distillery in traditional dunnage warehouses on earthen floors.

Waste Products

By recycling the co-products of our whisky process, we’re protecting the future of our distillery and the surrounding landscape for those who follow in our footsteps.

Our ongoing partnership with Grissan allows us to manage the co-products of our production process. An AD (Anaerobic Digestion) plant processes all the co-products from our whisky making process to create low carbon biogas for use as an alternative fuel for vehicles and as renewable heat.
